WHEREAS, Mary Williams was born to Pinkie and Willis Williams on July 11, 1924 in West Blocton, Alabama. Her formative years were spent in Logan, West Virginia, where she graduated from high school in 1941; and,

WHEREAS, Mary moved to Pittsburgh and graduated from business college in Pittsburgh in the early 1950s and received a degree in theology from Rodman Street Theological Seminary in the 1990s; and,

 

WHEREAS, after graduation, she did missionary work nationally and internationally, spending time in Israel and Palestine in 1996; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Mary’s professional career was marked by her 30-year tenure at the Allegheny County Sanitation Authority, where she made significant contributions before retiring in 1989. Additionally, she worked as an independent contractor tax consultant, a role for which she was trained by H&R Block. This dual career path showcased her versatility and dedication and work ethic; and, 

 

WHEREAS, Mary resided in the Chartiers City neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh from 1970 to 2012. During this time, she served as a Judge of Election, a role that required her to maintain paperwork and enforce polling place rules meticulously. This commitment to civic duty is a testament to her dedication to her community; and,   

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and congratulate Mary Williams on the momentous occasion of her 100th Birthday; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Thursday, July 11, 2024 to be “Mary Williams Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
