WHEREAS, Family Resources began almost 150 years ago, when two Pittsburgh women organized a home visiting program to aid poor families beset by mass crowding, social problems, and ill health through pioneering "fresh air" activities for inner-city children; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Family Resources is to prevent and treat child abuse by strengthening families and neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Family Resources, the largest private nonprofit in this region focused on child abuse, dreams of a world where children are safe and healthy; and
WHEREAS, on April 25, 2012, at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, Family Resources hosted a gathering to celebrate their 17th annual awards dinner; and
WHEREAS, this year's dinner will feature a special tribute to Dr. Walter Howard Smith, Jr. who has retired after 25 years of service as the Executive Director of Family Resources from 1997 to 2012 and the clinical director for the prior ten years; and
WHEREAS, under Dr. Smith's leadership Family Resources grew from 90 staff and an annual budget of 3.6 million dollars to 200 staff and ten million dollars; and
WHEREAS, in addition, Family Resources honors the following individuals and organizations in appreciation for their efforts to prevent child abuse and heal its victims in this region:

ComputeReach - Community Champ
Indera Multani, Family Advocate - Community Service Award
Geri Lawlor, Family Services Caseworker - Community Service Award

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the important work of Family Resources for its dedicated efforts in preventing and treating child abuse by strengthening families and neighborhoods, and does hereby declare Wednesday, April 25, 2012, to be "Family Resources Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
