WHEREAS, a lifelong Pittsburgh resident, Richard Meritzer was born in 1953; and,
WHEREAS, Richard graduated from Peabody High School in 1971 and continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, receiving an undergraduate degree for Political Science and Government and a Master’s Degree for Urban and Regional Planning with a Concentration in Public Participation and Government; and,
WHEREAS, in October 1983, Richard began his career with the City of Pittsburgh as the Residential Parking Permit Specialist within the Department of Engineering and Construction before joining the Department of City Planning as a Senior Planner; and,
WHEREAS, in Richard’s tenure with the Department of City Planning, he helped to create more bicycle-friendly neighbors by drafting legislation to create bike trails and helping to place bike racks throughout Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, Richard created the first internship program in the Department of City Planning, which has since introduced nearly 600 students to his mission of inclusivity and mentorship; and,
WHERAS, Richard spent his career as a tireless advocate for those with differing abilities. As ADA Coordinator, he helped to build more accessible spaces and create opportunities for those limited mobility; and,
WHEREAS, Richard served Stanton Heights as a longtime Democratic committeeperson and was active in the Rodef Shalom Congregation.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the life and legacy of Richard Meritzer; and,
BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby thank Richard for his service and dedication to the residents of Pittsburgh and for his contributions toward building a more inclusive city.
