WHEREAS, Maria Cohen’s seven-year tenure with the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition (SHUC) established a strong and visible presence for the organization throughout Squirrel Hill and beyond; and,
WHEREAS, Maria strengthened SHUC’s relationship with the Squirrel Hill Business District through partnerships with and service on the Uncover Squirrel Hill Board, helping bring more visitors to the business corridor through initiatives such as the Wine Walks and Night Markets; and,
WHEREAS, Maria worked tirelessly to expand SHUC’s outreach to neighboring communities and community organizations, launching collaborations such as the annual Holiday Mingle, which brings residents together to learn about and celebrate different religious holiday traditions; and,
WHEREAS, Maria strengthened SHUC’s partnerships with organizations including the Jewish Community Center (JCC), becoming actively involved in the 10.27 Healing Partnership and Center for Loving Kindness; and,
WHEREAS, Maria oversaw SHUC’s fiduciary responsibilities and supported countless projects that improved the quality of life in the neighborhood, including O’Connor’s Corner, the URA Bench Grants, and the renovation of the Neill Log House; and,
WHEREAS, Maria shepherded SHUC and the Squirrel Hill community through the COVID-19 pandemic, turning a period of unprecedented uncertainty into an opportunity to create new ways for neighbors to connect, including porch parties and a newsletter that kept residents informed and engaged; and,
WHEREAS, Maria stepped up to support community members following the Jefferson Fire, helping establish a Resource Fair to connect those affected with assistance and resources.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Maria Cohen for seven years of dedicated service to Squirrel Hill and recognizes her lasting contributions to the neighborhood and its residents; and,
