Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the important work of Pirates Charities, for its impact of charitable support and dedicated efforts throughout the Pittsburgh region; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, April 21, 2012, to be “Pittsburgh Pirates 5K Home Run Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on April 30, 1887, the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, renamed the Pirates in 1891, played their first National League game, defeating the defending league champion Chicago White Stockings, 6-2, in front of nearly 10,000 fans at Recreation Park; and
WHEREAS, Pirates Charities, the official philanthropic arm of the Pittsburgh Pirates, supports health, fitness, and education programs and projects aimed at improving the lives of children and adults in the greater Pittsburgh area; and
WHEREAS, since its inception in the Fall of 2006, Pirates Charities has contributed more than $2.4 million to the Pittsburgh region, Bradenton, Florida community and Estorga, Dominican Republic (the Pirates Latin American Headquarters); and
WHEREAS, during its long history, the Pittsburgh Pirates has maintained deep-rooted relationships throughout the region, demonstrated by participating and supporting more than 3,000 community organizations over the past year; and
WHEREAS, Pirates Charities invites runners, walkers and fans of all ages and abilities on Saturday, April 21, 2012, to join the Pittsburgh Pirates 5K Home Run annual run and/or walk; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Pirates 5K Home Run participants will cross the finish line on the field at PNC Park, and everyone will have the opportunity to win great prizes such as season tickets, autographed memorabilia and more;
