WHEREAS, founded in 1995, The Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania (PFWP) promotes research efforts to find a cure and provides resources, information, education, and support for those with Parkinson's disease and their families; and,
WHEREAS, there are approximately 12,000 people in Western Pennsylvania currently living with Parkinson's disease, and PFWP provides program coordination and leadership to 23 regional support groups serving 850 families; and,
WHEREAS, PFWP has played a vital role in encouraging the growth of regional Parkinson's disease research programs, facilities, and scientists through its interface with research institutions and support of research through grants; and,
WHEREAS, in its 17-year history, the organization has paid directly or committed $750,000 to Parkinson's disease research and serves as a referral source to local clinical trials on various aspects of Parkinson's disease; and,
WHEREAS, today, the PFWP serves as the Western Pennsylvanian hub for disease information, exercise and educational programs, and social connection for patients and their loved ones through support groups. The Foundation partnered with Allegheny Health Network to launch the Cahouet Center for Comprehensive Parkinson's Care, which is one of the nation's most well-regarded centers for the treatment of Parkinson's patients; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, September 30th, PFWP will host its annual Step Forward community festival and walk to raise funds that will directly support research. Visit www.stepforwardpittsburgh.org to learn more; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize The Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania for building awareness, raising funds, and supporting patients and families throughout the Pittsburgh region; and,
