WHEREAS, in April 1905, some residents of Union Township, Allegheny County petitioned the Court of Quarter Sessions of Allegheny County to separate from Union Township and to be incorporated as the borough of Beechview; a petition that was granted on July 28, 1905; and
WHEREAS, the year 2005 heralds the Beechview Centennial Celebration, an event conceived by the Beechview Centennial Celebration Committee as a way to recognize the neighborhood's rich history by planning activities reminiscent of the past and to celebrate the unique place that Beechview and her residents hold in the life of the City of Pittsburgh by coming together in special events to honor these residents – past and present; and
WHEREAS, the Beechview Centennial Celebration Committee authorized the following activities to be undertaken: planning a community logo contest, holding a school essay contest, designing a memorial quilt, gathering local recipes for a centennial cookbook, researching and writing a new history entitled Beechview, creating a Website that will be in place for a year, preparing decorative flags for Broadway Avenue, planting a Beech tree, burying a time capsule and placing a commemorative bronze marker above it; and
WHEREAS, the Beechview Centennial Celebration Committee also organized for July 23, 2005, a Dedication Ceremony, Parade, and Festival Day replete with live entertainment, sidewalk festivities, special exciting activities for children, and Fireworks for a grand finale; and
WHEREAS, the Beechview Centennial Celebration Committee arranged an Ecumenical Church Service to be held on July 24, 2005, at the St. Pamphilus Roman Catholic Church, during which the residents will rededicate themselves to meet their future with energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm.
