Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Pittsburgh City Council does hereby honor Christine Haas and The Midwife Center for their deep commitment to the health and wellness of women and babies at all stages of the birth cycle. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, March 29, 2011, Christine Haas and The Midwife Center Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Christine Haas has been the executive director of The Midwife Center for Birth and Women's Health for nine years and before this she was a member of the founding board of the non-profit organization after it re-incorporated in 2000; and
 
WHEREAS, the mission of The Midwife Center is to provide exceptional woman-centered pregnancy, birth, and well-woman care in southwestern Pennsylvania's only independent birth center; and
 
WHEREAS, the midwives at the Midwife Center provide well-women, prenatal, birth and postpartum care and prenatal classes and wellness education at the birth center, providing care for both mothers and babies in all stages of the birthing process; and
 
WHEREAS, under Christine's direction, The Midwife Center opened a new, independent and licensed birth center for Pittsburgh in 2003, expanded its facility and technology to accommodate more women and families, increased public education about The Midwife Center and other birth centers as options for women, and began the Women's Health Fund in 2005; and
 
WHEREAS, the Women's Health Fund, now known as the Bubbe Hannah Fund, helps provide women who would otherwise be unable to receive quality healthcare with support programs and services and the ability to use The Midwife Center; and
 
WHEREAS, due to her committed and compassionate work for the Midwife Center, Christine was named the 2011 "Woman Who Makes a Difference" by The Zonta Club of Pittsburgh, a worldwide organization that advances the status of women and girls through service, education and advocacy.
