Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of encourages Pittsburgh individuals, organizations and businesses to participate in Earth Hour Day 2009 and calls upon Pittsburgh's government to take the lead by turning off lights in its buildings; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares March 28, 2009, “Earth Hour Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday, March 28, 2009 between 8:30pm and 9:30pm local time; and
WHEREAS, the initiative originated in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour on March 31, 2007; and
WHEREAS, in 2008 50 million people across 35 countries participated in the event including members of Pittsburgh's arts, university, and technology communities; and
WHEREAS, 680 cities in 77 countries have signed up for Earth Hour 2009 and more join every day; and
WHEREAS, the aim of the campaign is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better.
