Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Carnegie Science Center for raising the profile of science in our everyday lives thanks the Carnegie Science Center Awardees for excellence in innovation.

WHEREAS, the Carnegie Science Center annually celebrates the most outstanding recent achievements in science and technology in Southwestern Pennsylvania; and
 
WHEREAS, the Carnegie Science Center Awards for Excellence raise public awareness of the place of science in our daily lives as well as underscore the interrelationship of schools and universities, research laboratories, business development and job creation in our region; and
 
WHEREAS, the 2004 Carnegie Science Center Award for Excellence Honorees are:
    • University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Chairman's Award; and

    • Robert A Erickson, William M. Long, Greg W. Needham, Kennametal Inc., Advanced Manufacturing & Materials; and
    • ·      
    • John W. Mellors, M.D., University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Biomedical; and
    • ·      
    • Eric J. Beckman, Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh, Environmental; and
    • ·      
    • Tuomas Sandholm, Ph.D., CombineNet, Inc, Information Technology; and
    • ·      
    • Benno Bernt, Ph.D., University Partners, Inc., Catalyst; and

WHEREAS, this year's Carnegie Science Center Honorees will receive their awards at a ceremony to be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, April 21, 2004, at the Hilton Pittsburgh, hosted by noted business personality Bill Flanagan, with keynote speaker Jill Jones, author of "Empire of Light."
