WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Greater Pittsburgh has matched more than 19,000 children in the Pittsburgh area with responsible, caring adult mentors since 1965, and currently serves more than 1,200 children in the area; and
WHEREAS, the program works to deter the occurrence of problematic behaviors in children before they are able to take root, and through role modeling, guidance and friendship, fills a void for children who are in need of stable and supportive bonds with caring adults; and
WHEREAS, nationwide, children enrolled in BBBS are significantly less likely to begin using illegal drugs and alcohol, are more likely to attend school, and are better equipped to handle challenges in their home lives; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Chapter was recognized this year for its high-quality services by the national organization as the Agency of the Year and was awarded a Pinnacle Award for achieving "gold standard" status in two consecutive years.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh on its award and commend the program for its 46 years of invaluable service to the community; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare July 2, 2012 to be "Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
