WHEREAS, Cribs for Kids was founded in 1998 by District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala, Jr., Cribs for Kids Executive Director Judith Bannon, the late Mayor Bob O'Connor, and the late Pittsburgh Police Commander Gwen Elliot, to eliminate accidental, sleep-related infant deaths due to unsafe sleep environments and to decrease infant mortality rates throughout Pennsylvania. Cribs for Kids continues to educate parents and caregivers about safe sleep practices, and provide portable cribs for families in need; and
WHEREAS, the Women of Achievement Awards was founded in 2002 by Bonnie DiCarlo and JoAnn R. Forrester to honor the outstanding accomplishments of women and raise funds for organizations that focus on the needs of women and children in the Pittsburgh area; and,
WHEREAS, on March 3, 2016, the 11th annual Women of Achievement Awards, will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel, hosted by Stephen A. Zappala, Jr. and Mrs. Mary Zappala, with the proceeds benefitting Cribs for Kids. The event also marks the start of Women's History Month in Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, this year's awards will be presented to 18 prominent women selected for excellence in their fields, significant contributions to the betterment of their communities, and outstanding accomplishments for the advancement of women. The distinguished honorees include: Lori Bechtel-Wherry, Julia Bubanovich, Debra L. Caplan, The Honorable Gina Cerilli, Tracy J. DeCock, Olivera J. Finn, Dalili Hall, Carol Israel, Lillie Leonardi, Jacqueline Lever, Anne Lewis, Diana Napper, Michele Palmieri, Kelli Priddy, Melanie Querry, Deborah Rice-Johnson, Lisa K. Stauffer, and Lori Zimmer; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Cribs for Kids for their success in reducing the incidence of infant, sleep-related death through their successful awareness campaigns and outreach; and the Women of Achievement Awards for honoring the achievements ...
