WHEREAS, the year 2026 marks the 66th annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association;
WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works is dedicated to managing, operating, and maintaining the City’s essential infrastructure while delivering services that are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities and to public health, high quality of life, and well-being of the residents of the City of Pittsburgh;
WHEREAS, these infrastructure, facilities, and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals, who are engineers, managers, and employees at all levels of government and the private sector, who are responsible for rebuilding, improving, and protecting our nation’s transportation, water supply, water treatment and solid waste systems, public buildings, and other structures and facilities essential for our citizens;
WHEREAS, through its Forestry Division, Public Works ensures the timely, safe, and efficient care of the City’s urban forest. The Department further supports the safety and well-being of residents and visitors by responding to emergencies such as flooding, land subsidence, snow and ice conditions, and other weather-related events;
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest for the citizens, civic leaders, and youth in the City of Pittsburgh to gain knowledge of and maintain an ongoing interest and understanding of the
importance of public works and public works programs in their respective communities;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Department of Public Works and the substantial contributions they make to protecting our national health, safety and advancing quality of life for all; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of May 17 through May 23 2026 to be “National Public Works Week” in the City of Pittsburgh.
