WHEREAS, the Homer S. Brown Division of the Allegheny County Bar Association is hosting a reception celebrating its 50th Anniversary on October 17, 2019 at 5:30pm at the K&L Gates Center; and,
WHEREAS, the Homer S. Brown Division was founded in 1969 as the Black Lawyers of Western Pennsylvania to serve not only black lawyers and law school students, but the black community at large; and,
WHEREAS, the organization subsequently renamed itself after Pittsburgh’s first African American judge, Homer S. Brown, in honor of his stellar accomplishments and enormous contributions to the Pittsburgh legal community; and,
WHEREAS, the Homer S. Brown organization became a division of the Allegheny County Bar Association in 2011; and,
WHEREAS, the Homer S. Brown Division continues to provide a forum for problems and obligations that affect African-American members of the bar and to inform the Allegheny County Bar Association of the needs and opinions of its African-American members; and,
WHEREAS, the Homer S. Brown Division develops education, networking, public service programs, legal clinics, scholarships and other services that assist members of the bar, the local African-American community, and protects the political and civil rights of people of African descent and assists local law students of African descent;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Thursday, October 17, 2019 to be “Homer S. Brown Day” in the City of Pittsburgh and further commends the Homer S. Brown Division of the Allegheny County Bar Association for its 50 years of service to the Pittsburgh community.
