Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Mardi Isler for her commitment as a community advocate and congratulates Mardi for receiving the 2016 Root Award from Tree Pittsburgh; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, October 7, 2016 to be "MARDI ISLER DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh, founded in 2006 out of a growing concern for the health and well-being of Pittsburgh's trees, is dedicated to enhancing the City's vitality by restoring and protecting our tree population through tree care, planting, education and advocacy.; and,

WHEREAS, Tree Pittsburgh has engaged 5000+ volunteers to care for more than 12,000 trees, planted 25,000 + trees throughout Allegheny County and trained 1500 local residents to serve as Tree Tenders; in addition Tree Pittsburgh has led the development of the City's very first 20 year Urban Forest Master Plan; and,

WHEREAS, this year, Tree Pittsburgh will celebrate its accomplishments on Friday, October 7, 2016 at the Root Ball at the Fairmont Hotel with a Forest to Table multi course dinner, live music, specialty cocktails where they will honor Mardi Isler for her contribution as one of the organization's founders as well as for her long time commitment to protecting and growing our urban forest; and,

WHEREAS, Mardi Isler, born in Culpepper, VA, raised in Wyomissing, PA and educated at Penn State, came to Pittsburgh in 1984 and has become one of the community's greatest assets and tireless supporters. She is the original Chair of the City's Shade Tree Commission, Founding Board Member and President of Allies for Children, Secretary of the Board of Allegheny County Community College, President of Uncover Squirrel Hill and Chair of the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition's Gateway Committee; and,

WHEREAS, Mardi's commitment to the needs of the city in which she lives has led to numerous changes and improvements like the creation of Tree Vitalize, the greening and additions to Forbes and Murray corridor in Squirrel Hill, the creation of the Squirrel Hill Night Markets and the Lunar New Year celebration as well as innumerable environmental and tree policies and initiatives that have led to Mardi being recognized with the Tree Pittsburgh 2016 Root Award; and,
