Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for 40 years of historic achievement in the arts and dance with a groundbreaking season of diverse work to celebrate its 40th year and congratulates PBT for bringing to life one of the world's most beloved fairy tales with The Sleeping Beauty . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 16-18, 2009, to be “THE SLEEPING BEAUTY DAYS” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre was founded in 1969 by Nicholas Petrov, then Director of the Dance School Program at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, and has grown over the last 39 years into a world class dance and artistic institution, attracting over 70,000 visitors annually to the Cultural District ; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is currently under the artistic direction of Terrance S. Orr, whose leadership over the past 12 years has placed the PBT amongst the elite of national ballet companies in the country; and,
WHEREAS, over the last 40 years, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has toured extensively through 28 states, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, commissioned more than 10 New Works World Premiers, presented works rich both in the classics and by contemporary choreographers and has had renowned artistic directors and leadership, distinguishing itself with its arts education, community programs and its Ballet School; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater will celebrate its historic 40th Anniversary with a season displaying the virtuosity if its dancers in works that are entertaining, inspiring and thought- provoking, including two classic story ballets, a holiday favorite and three dynamic artistic works; and,
WHEREAS, in celebration of its 40th Anniversary, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will present one of the world's greatest classical ballets, The Sleeping Beauty, featuring choreography by Marius Petipa, staging and direction from Terrence S. Orr, costumes and scenery designed by David Walker and Peter I. Tchaikovsky's unforgettable score, performed live by the PBT Orchestra; and,
WHEREAS, The Sleeping Beauty , which debuted in St. Petersburg in 1890, is the result of the a prolific collaboration between choreographer Marius Petipa and composer Peter I.
