WHEREAS, October 6th is a special day for the Physician Assistant, or PA profession; and
WHEREAS, on this day in 1967, the first Physician Assistant graduated from Duke University; and
WHEREAS, today, there are more than 50,000 Physician Assistants in the United States, and over 3,000 practice medicine in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, quality health care is an important concern of the citizens of Pittsburgh, because affordable and accessible medical care is essential for the well being of all citizens; and
WHEREAS, Physician Assistants are recognized as important members of the health care delivery team who work closely with their supervising physicians to enhance the quality of medical care in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Physician Assistants around this country and throughout the state will celebrate October 6th through October 12th, 2008 as National Physician Assistant Week; and
WHEREAS, in the city of Pittsburgh, Chatham University and Duquesne University train quality Physician Assistants at the Masters level, in fully accredited Physician Assistant Studies Programs;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes, commends and thanks Physician Assistants for the medical care they provide throughout the year; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of October 6, 2008 through October 12, 2008 to be, "Physician Assistants Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
