WHEREAS, Mr. Steve Smith, a dedicated resident and coach from Elliott, will be honored at a banquet with his basketball team at the Emanuel United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 28th 2006; and
WHEREAS, Steve started the Emanuel Eagle's basketball team all on his own four years ago, and the team is still going strong with his leadership and commitment to the young men who play on the team; and
WHEREAS, Steve has been a resident of Elliott for the past 20 years and has been an active member in several neighborhood organizations: Along with being a basketball coach, Steve's other current duties include being the Commissioner of the City Wide Baseball League, Director of the Elliott Athletic Association, Coach of three soccer teams for the Elliott Athletic Association, member of the West End Elliott Citizen's Council and serves on the Finance Committee and Church Council of Emanuel United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS, Steve previously coached baseball for seven years and one year of softball with the Elliott Athletic Association, served three years as a Director on the West End Elliott Citizens Council and three years as Chairman of the Elliott clean-up projects for the West End Elliott Citizens Council; and
WHEREAS, Steve is a quiet man with strong family values; he and his wife Linda have three children: sons, Matt and Timothy and a daughter, Nicole. His commitment to neighborhood organizations and to youth athletic teams has given many children the opportunity to be part of a positive experience.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby commends Steve Smith for his dedication to the youth of Elliott and for his leadership in the community.
