WHEREAS, Mrs. E. Maxine Bruhns has for 41 years skillfully and enthusiastically acted as director of the 26 renowned "Nationality Rooms" at the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning, 7 of which were designed, constructed, and commissioned under her direction; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bruhns tirelessly strives to keep these rooms authentic and beautiful while they are visited by 20,000 people a year, and as result they have become a symbol of Pittsburgh's cultural diversity and a reminder of the city's long history as a home for people of many different backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bruhns has shown an extraordinary compassion for the displaced peoples of the world and has demonstrated her willingness to help by traveling with her late husband to help war refugees in Austria, Vietnam, and Cambodia. She has also resided in Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Germany, Greece, and Gabon; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bruhns' work is held in such high regard that she has been honored with many awards, including the YWCA -A Tribute to Women - Excellence in Education award in 2004, The Designated Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Award in 1993, and the World Affairs Council's David Glick Award in 1992.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, recognizes and commends E. Maxine Bruhns for her excellent and dedicated service to one of Pittsburgh's great cultural treasures.
