Resolution urging the federal government of the United States to uphold and continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration initiative.
Body
WHEREAS, more than 2 million individuals are estimated to be living in the United States who after arriving as children with their parents, are not citizens but have lived consistently in the United States as upstanding neighbors and contributing members to society; and,
WHEREAS, in June of 2012, the Obama administration announced that these individuals who came to the United States as children and currently meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative; and,
WHEREAS, since its inception, more than 740,000 individuals have applied for DACA status and the work authorization that accompanies it, and the economic contributions from DACA beneficiaries to federal programs such as Social Security total more than $24 billion.
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH HEREBY ENACTS AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby urges the federal government of the United States to uphold and continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration initiative.
