WHEREAS, Eleonora Duse was one of Italy's greatest stage actresses, a world-renowed performer who spoke through her art and inspired many other great performers of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, Duse's last performance occurred at the former Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh and she passed away from pneumonia shortly thereafter at the former Schenley Hotel, now the William Pitt Union at the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, The Honorary Consulate of Italy in Pittsburgh in collaboration with Italian-American Associations in the Pittsburgh Area, are committed to honoring Italy's artistic and cultural achievements; and
WHEREAS, these organizations are sponsoring a tribute to Duse entitled "Gabriele ed Eleonora: Una Passione Scarlatta," written, directed, and performed by Daniela Musini, from Abruzzo Italy, in her United States' debut; and
WHEREAS, Musini's performance will take place at the PNC Recital Hall at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University on June 1 at 7:00 p.m.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the artistic contributions of Elenora Duse and the efforts of the Honorary Consulate of Italy and Italian-American Associations of Pittsburgh to bring Italy's arts and culture to our residents and visitors; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 1, 2012 to be "Eleonora Duse Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
