WHEREAS, the Republic of India received it independence from Britain on August 15, 1947 and this year celebrates its 60th Independence Day; and
 
WHEREAS, Independence Day is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremonies and distribution of sweets; and
 
WHEREAS; the main celebration takes place in New Delhi <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Delhi>, where the Prime Minister <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_India> raises the national flag at the Red Fort <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delhi_Fort> and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts; and
 
WHEREAS, the Republic of India, is the seventh-largest <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_outlying_territories_by_total_area> country by geographical area, the second most populous <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population> country, and the most populous liberal democracy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_democracy> in the world; and
 
WHEREAS, the Indian Nationality Room Committee will hold a procession, flag hoisting, and cultural program on August 19th, 2007 at the Cathedral of Learning to mark the anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, the Indian Nationality Room was dedicated on January 9, 2000 and was designed to reflect the Indian Renaissance period of 7th.-12th. Century, A.D.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes India's 60th Independence Day and thanks the Indian Nationality Room Committee for hosting this enriching cultural event; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares August 15th, 2007, "Indian Independence Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
