WHEREAS, it is our collective responsibility to provide for the well-being of our children by passing on a strong work ethic, teaching them a sense of right and wrong and giving them support, guidance and skills to insure that they have every opportunity to succeed; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Board of Education Member Mark Brentley Sr. is the Founder and Co-Chairperson of "Take Your Father to School Day," which is celebrating its 13th Annual Day, and was designed for the School Board to implement and embrace the idea that fathers are important to the educational process; and
WHEREAS, "Take Your Father to School Day" emphasizes the involvement of both parents in the lives of their children in order to respond and reverse societal trends that have lessened and discouraged the participation of fathers in the formal education of their children; and
WHEREAS, for the sake of our children, the well being of our neighborhoods and the future of our nation, fathers of school age children are encouraged to participate to the fullest extent possible in their children's education and to take the opportunity to attend school with their children on May 20, 2011; and
WHEREAS, this year's theme for the Take Your Father to School Day Rally is "Yes Eye Can" in which fathers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to a local food bank and to bring used eye glasses to be donated to those in need;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acknowledge this worthy and important program and congratulate Mark Brentley Sr., School Board Member and Chairman of Take Your Father to School Day, and all of his volunteers and participants who give of themselves to further the growth and healthy development of our city's children; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, May 20, 2011 to be "Take Your Father to School Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
