Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for their efforts to restore this important memorial; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 11, 2012 “George Westinghouse Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the George Westinghouse Memorial is one of the most unique-yet little-known-monuments in the City; and
WHEREAS, George Westinghouse was a Pittsburgh giant, born on October 6, 1846 he obtained 361 patents over his lifetime (an average of one every seven weeks) and revolutionized major industries with his innovations in energy and transportation; and
WHEREAS, Westinghouse Air Brake Company, founded in 1869, was the first employer in the nation to implement nine-hour work days and weekends off for employees, showing a commitment to fair treatment of working people long before it was mandated by government; and
WHEREAS, tucked away in a shady grove where Schenley Park meets the edges of the Carnegie Mellon University campus, the memorial has stood since 1930 as a reminder of our City's legacy and spirit of education, entrepreneurship, and scientific advancement; and
WHEREAS, designed by Henry Hornbostel and Eric Wood and sculpted by Daniel Chester French and Paul Fjelde, the bronze statue of Westinghouse faces three curved panels depicting scenes of industrialization and engineering; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has embarked upon an ambitious restoration plan to incorporate the surrounding natural beauty of Schenley Park into the memorial, make the site ADA-compliant, improve accessibility and viewpoints, and provide lighting; and
WHEREAS, the memorial and restoration site will be featured in a walking tour of Schenley Park statues and monuments on Saturday, October 6th in partnership with Venture Outdoors and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy; and
