WHEREAS, in 2013, PNC Park, the jewel of American baseball parks, became a “Field of Dreams” for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the City of Pittsburgh and their fans; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Pirates joined the National League in 1887 and were competitive from its early years, winning 3 NL titles in 1901-1903, playing in the first World Series and winning their first World Series in 1909 behind Honus Wagner. The Pirates had their ups and downs throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries but included a total of 7 World Series appearances with 5 wins and boasted stars such as Honus Wagner, Pie Traynor, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen which morphed this year into a team the city will never forget led by Andrew McCutcheon, AJ Burnett, Neil Walker, Gerrit Cole, Russell Martin, Pedro Alvarez and the rest of the 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates, those being Francisco Liriano, Jeff Locke, Charlie Morton, John Buck, Tony Sanchez, Clint Barmes, Chase d'Arnaud, Josh Harrison, Garret Jones, Justin Morneau, Gaby Sanchez, Marlon Byrd, Andrew Lambo, Starling Marte, Felix Pie, Jerry Sands, Travis Snider, Jose Tabata, Brandon Cumpton, Kyle Farnsworth, Jeanmar Gomez, Jared Hughes, Kris Johnson, Vin Mazzaro, Mark Melancon, Bryan Morris, Andy Oliver, Stolmy Pimentel, Ryan Reid, Phil Irwin, Jeff Karstens, Michael McKenry, Kyle McPherson and Wandy Rodriquez ; and,
WHEREAS, in the footsteps of great Pirate teams and players, and with the management and leadership of Bob Nutting, Frank Coonelly and Neil Huntington, the 2013 Pirate Baseball Club took shape. With Manager Clint Hurdle at the helm, this team captured the imagination of Pittsburgh fans by playing exciting, competitive baseball and winning 94 regular season games and 3 playoff victories against Cincinnati and St. Louis; and,
