Whereas, we recognize that girls should participate in sports to develop the discipline and endurance that results from athletic competition; and
Whereas, girls should also enjoy the rewards of physical health and personal development provided by involvement in sports; and
Whereas, we welcome Gabby Means, a member of the Greenfield Organization's softball league, to Council today and honor her determination to improve the condition of Gladstone Field in Greenfield; and
Whereas, Gabby, a fifth grader at Minadeo Elementary School, recently entered Briggs & Stratton Corp.'s Diamonds in the Rough competition for a chance to win $20,000 from the company for improvements to Gladstone Field; and
Whereas, Gabby finished second in the competition and as a finalist received a $5,000 grant for improvements to the field; and
Whereas, Gabby's remarkable success in the Diamonds in the Rough competition contributes to the strong community spirit and athletic tradition of Pittsburgh; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, declares June 6, 2006 "Gabby Means Day," and calls upon our citizens to embrace Gabby's enthusiasm and celebrate her accomplishment.
