WHEREAS, for over 38 years Family House has been a place of care, comfort, and convenience for those who need a place to stay while receiving medical treatment, providing a true "family" atmosphere; and,

WHEREAS, as a world-class medical hub the need for safe, affordable accommodations for traveling patients and their families in Pittsburgh was recognized, so community members and organizations like the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Cancer Society and the University Health Center of Pittsburgh came together to establish Family House in 1980; and,
WHEREAS, the demand for this type of housing was readily apparent, with the first McKee Place facility's 39 rooms filling up within three days of opening in fall of 1983, and serving nearly 300,000 guests in the decades since; and,
WHEREAS, they have used several facilities over the years to house patients seeking treatment, and the families thereof, currently including homes in Oakland and Shadyside; and,
WHEREAS, the former Courtyard by Marriott building in Bloomfield presented a unique opportunity to being all patients “under one roof”, in a central location, within five miles of the majority of the region's intensive treatment centers; and,
WHEREAS, this will enable Family House to provide private rooms with kitchens for immunosuppressed patients, offer enhanced spaces to benefit caregivers and patients, and provide new and improved programming for the thousands of guests they host annually,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of The City of Pittsburgh hereby commends Family House for their dedication to serving those in need by providing much needed amenities to patients receiving life-saving medical treatment here in the City of Pittsburgh and their families.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Family House on the ribbon cutting of their new facility and declares THURSDAY, JULY 28TH, “Family House Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
