WHEREAS May is National Tennis Month in the United States and a celebration of the beginning of the outdoor season; and
WHEREAS spring brings a new attention to fitness, and tennis - being a sport of a lifetime - offers an unparalleled way to have fun and get into shape; and
WHEREAS the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S., and the USTA/Middle States Section/Allegheny Mountain District promotes USTA programs in the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS the USTA's "Tennis in the Parks" program is a critical component in the efforts to expand the reach of the game since 49 percent of new tennis players play through programs at public parks and more than 70 percent of all tennis is played on public courts;

Now Therefore, be it Resolved the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the City of Pittsburgh's Tennis Department and the USTA's Middle States Section/Allegheny Mountain District for working together to promote and develop the growth of tennis making it available to all of the citizens of Pittsburgh.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 24, 2005, "Celebrate Tennis Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
