WHEREAS, The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open golf tournament of the United States. It is the second of the four major championships in golf and is on the official schedule of the PGA Tour and the European Tour. It is staged by the United States Golf Association in mid-June and scheduled so that if there are no weather delays, the final round is played on the third Sunday, which is Father’s Day; and,
WHEREAS, the first U.S. Open was played, in October of 1895, on a 9-hole golf course at the Newport Country Club in Newport, RI. In its 121 year history, the U.S. Open has been played at the Oakmont Country Club in the eastern suburb of Pittsburgh, PA ten times, the last 4 times, including this year, under the supervision and leadership of Club Professional Bob Ford; and,
WHEREAS, the U.S. Open generates extraordinary excitement and pride to the Oakmont Country Club, and the Pittsburgh area, as well as realizing the monetary and financial benefits to the Western Pennsylvania region; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize, commend and congratulate the United States Golf Association on the occasion of the 2016 U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club and congratulates the Oakmont Country Club for hosting and holding the U.S. Open at its world renowned facility; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 13 - June 19, 2016, to be “U.S. OPEN WEEK” in the City of Pittsburgh.
