WHEREAS, The Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC)/Bidwell was founded in 1968 during a time of crisis and change in the community. Founded by Reverend James Robinson, then Pastor of the Bidwell Presbyterian Church and Dr. Betty Robinson, MYDC was designed originally as a recreational facility and alternative to street life for local community youth.
WHEREAS, Since 1968, the Manchester Youth Development Center (MYDC)/Bidwell has been serving children and families from the Manchester and surrounding communities from providing lunch to Manchester Elementary School, and being a recreation center that host roller skating, boxing and basketball activities to a school-based curriculum designed by Dr. Betty Robinson in an after school setting for children 9 to 13 years of age, a nursery school program (Training Wheels), providing Afterschool/ Summer and Saturday Programs, as well as being an integral part of establishing the Manchester Academic Charter School.
WHEREAS, the vision the Robinson's had to demonstrate their love for the children of their community by creating a safe nurturing environment for them to learn, play, grow and become productive adults is still being realized today. At MYDC we believe that giving youth a strong foundation for a productive life; we are helping to build future generations of educational, community, business and political leaders for the City of Pittsburgh and beyond. The contributions of our alumni can be felt across the country and around the world.
WHEREAS, MYDC's Sixth Gala will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Manchester Craftsman's Guild. We will "Celebrate 50 years Of Service to Our Community" and the many achievements and accomplishments of MYDC students.
