Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Public Theater and its Education and Outreach Staff for its remarkable Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest ; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby laud the exceptional talent of the six outstanding winners for their extraordinary performances and wishes them well for a future enhanced and inspired by the Pittsburgh Public Theater.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Public Theater is a contemporary theater in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh offering intimate, engaging, professional theater with diverse productions in the classics of the American theater, masterworks from the international repertoire, world premiers and contemporary plays and musicals of exceptional merit; and,

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Public Theater offers a dynamic Public Education Program with initiatives that reach more than 13,000 young people each year offering effective and engaging arts education opportunities, the chance to experience as many artistic and education programs as possible and the ability to appreciate the dramatic arts, thereby helping to build the arts audience of the future; and,

WHEREAS, one of those engaging opportunities is the Annual Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest which is open to all elementary, middle and high school students, Grades 4-12, in which contestants can perform a scene or monologue from any of the works of William Shakespeare on The Public's main stage in front of a panel of judges and, as a finalist, in front of an audience; and,

WHEREAS, the 2008 winners in their categories are

Upper Division Monologue: Blake Stadnik from Lincoln Park Charter School

Upper Division Scene: Emily Gup and Nomi Leasure from CAPA High School

Lower Division Monologue: Alex Roth from Chartiers Valley Elementary School

Lower Division Scene: Emma Somers and Meggie Booth
from Liberty Elementary School
