Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh joins the community in recognizing the NAACP Pittsburgh Branch for its much appreciated and needed service to the African-American Community and for "Still Fighting for Freedom!"

Whereas, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Pittsburgh Branch was founded 1915; and

Whereas, Since that time, the Pittsburgh Branch of the NAACP has lived up to its mission in trying to "…improve the political, educational, social, and economic status of minority groups; eliminate racial prejudice; keep the public aware of the adverse effects of racial discrimination; and take lawful action to secure its elimination," in the Pittsburgh region; and

Whereas, The NAACP Pittsburgh Branch has been at the forefront of leadership exemplified by such acts like: Strategy '95/2002, a plan to end black-on-black violence in Pittsburgh, Meeting with the Governor of Pennsylvania to address the lack of diversity among county and state judges as well as organizing the grassroots voter-registration efforts of the Black Political Empowerment Project; and

Whereas, The NAACP has also displayed tremendous advocacy within the city through things such as: The nation's first federally monitored Consent Decree, governing local police affairs, Pittsburgh Works legislation, Citizens Police Review Board, and financial support for area black-based financial institutions; and

Whereas, Through all their endeavors the NAACP has proven, time-and-again, to be considered by many, as the premier civil rights voice for African-Americans throughout the greater Pittsburgh region; and

Whereas, At this years 50th Annual Human Rights Dinner, the speaker for the evening is the NAACP National President and CEO Kweisi Mfume. Since taking office Mfume has raised the standards and expectations of NAACP branches nationwide and also implemented his six-point agenda which has given the NAACP a clear and compelling blueprint for the 21st century.
