WHEREAS, approximately 1 in 3 U.S. citizens born after 2000 will be affected by diabetes during their lifetime, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Americans, each year, more than 200,000 deaths are reported as being caused by diabetes or it complications; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) designated November 14th as World Diabetes Day, have urged the world to light buildings blue to increase global awareness about diabetes and the impact of diabetes in the world; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that one of every seven healthcare dollars in the United States is spent on a person with diabetes, as follow up and treatment can increase expenditures four times as compared to a person without diabetes, increasing the economic impact of society due to loss of productivity, disability or loss of life; and
WHEREAS, World Diabetes Day will be celebrated with a diabetes awareness booth for education and screening at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and Western Pennsylvania Hospital (WPH), a “Blue Light Special” will be served in the AGH Café Allegheny and at the WPH Friendship Dining Room as a healthy choice for visitors, along with a radio interview conducted by Dr. Patricia Bononi, Medical Director of the Joslin Diabetes Center, West Penn Allegheny Health System, speaking about the importance of World Diabetes Day; and
WHEREAS, the following organizations have offered support and partnered with this year's World Diabetes Day:
