Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate the late Omar Islam for his love and dedication to family, friends and the entire City of Pittsburgh; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, December 7, 2013 to be “Omar Islam Day” in the City of Pittsburgh, in commemoration of a young man whose promising future was taken away, but whose dedication and optimism will never be forgotten.

WHEREAS, Omar Islam was a young man ready to begin a bright and meaningful future in which he would use his talents and his love of people for the good of Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, Omar Islam was ruthlessly murdered on October 8, 2013 just 3 days before his 22nd birthday, leaving behind his mother Jacquelyn Murray, his younger brother Samir and many throughout the community; and

WHEREAS, Omar Islam is remembered by family members, friends and co-workers as an outspoken, loving and warmly generous young man. Omar's brother especially treasures the time they spent together sharing memories of family adventures, with Omar always providing lively and funny commentary; and

WHEREAS, it is sadly ironic that the last text Omar sent before his death stated simply “I'm walking on sunshine”; and

WHEREAS, Omar Islam dedicated time and energy to many community efforts, including the Garden of Peace, which serves the LGBT community's health and welfare needs and Project Silk, an HIV prevention effort geared towards young people in the Black and Hispanic communities; and

WHEREAS, from the time he was very young, Omar Islam dreamt of a life in the field of medicine, with the goal of helping to heal those in need; and

WHEREAS, this dedicated Pittsburgher was scheduled to begin working at UPMC on the day after his murder; and

WHEREAS, Omar Islam was a warm and uplifting person, who, in the words of a close friend, “Could turn your whole day around”; and

WHEREAS, the memory of Omar Islam will continue to inspire all those he met during his brief time on earth and will be remembered on December 7 at the Pittsburgh Honors Ball at the Andy Warhol Museum;
