WHEREAS, in December, 2005, a unanimous vote of City Council created what is now known as Emerald View Park, a true jewel for the citizens of Mount Washington and all visitors and citizens of the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, this came as the result of the efforts of a group of visionaries from Mount Washington who envisioned a 280 acre park that joined Allentown, Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights; and
WHEREAS, Emerald View Park brings environmental benefits like improving storm water flows, reducing air pollution and ameliorating the heat island effect and also brings economic opportunities such as growth in local businesses, increased property values and provides social, recreation and health benefits; and
WHEREAS, since the park's inception, the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation has raised over $3.1 million to invest in the Park and to fund the 2005 Park Master Implementation Plan and the 2010 Master Trail Plan; and
WHEREAS, Emerald View Park has expanded 4 times since its original borders were determined and will soon grow to 257 acres and will, ultimately, include 19 miles of trails; and
WHEREAS, over these past 5 years, over 5,000 volunteer hours have been logged while planting 1,500 trees and 2,500 pounds of native grass seed; installing two highly acclaimed statues; upgrading street lights; removing 50,000 pounds of garbage; and constructing or renovating more than 3 miles of trails.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does, hereby, commend and thank the Mount Washington Community Development Corporation and the countless volunteers who have worked so hard to develop and maintain this jewel of the City skyline.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Tuesday, March 8, 2011, be designated Emerald View Park Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
