WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST) Regional Competition will be held this weekend; and
WHEREAS, FIRST is a multinational organization and competition that introduces and excites students about science, math, engineering, and robotics; and
WHEREAS, students at the competition work with a professional mentor to design and build a robot that then competes in competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot; and
WHEREAS, the FIRST competition teaches students the values of creativity, determination, and hard-work, as well as the power of collaboration; and
WHEREAS, over 50,000 youths have participated in FIRST programs over the past year; and
WHEREAS, teams in the Pittsburgh Regional competition are competing for a place in the National Championship, April 21-23, in Atlanta, Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh thanks the local organizing team for all of their time and hard-work that went into planning the competition, and wishes all of the competitors the best of luck; and
THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Friday, March 11, 2005 FIRST Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
