WHEREAS, after hours of planning and community cooperation, the first Homewood/Squirrel Hill neighborhood clean-up will take place on the weekend of Saturday, September 16 and the Sunday, September 17, 2006 and will conclude with a Squirrel Hill- Homewood cookout and community social in Mellon Park on Sunday September 17; and
WHEREAS, the East Side Community Collaborative led by Bernadette Turner and the United Jewish Federation led by Boris Weinstein, have organized a grassroots cleanup effort, named the Homewood /Squirrel Hill Clean-Up Collaborative, which 16 community organizations and businesses as well as a majority of neighborhood residents have committed to participate; and
WHEREAS, both the communities of Squirrel Hill and Homewood are tightly knit and are religious neighborhoods with deep rooted histories. Ms. Turner of the East Side Community Collaborative and Mr. Weinstein of the United Jewish Federation recognized the traditions and goals of both neighborhoods and identified environmental clean-up as a focal point of both communities; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Turner and Mr. Weinstein committed their organizations and others to solving the problem of litter within their neighborhoods as well as being part of the solution to revitalize our streets and took it upon themselves to take action for a cleaner Pittsburgh.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, recognizes the collective of participating organizations that make up the Homewood/Squirrel Hill Clean-Up Coalition for their efforts to develop and sustain safer and cleaner communities and create a bond between neighborhoods; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares the weekend of September 16 and 17, 2006 the "Homewood/Squirrel Hill Clean -Up Weekend" in the City of Pittsburgh.
