WHEREAS, William P. Mullen, who resides in Banksville, was elected as the 53rd Sheriff of Allegheny County in 2007 and 2009; and,
WHEREAS, Sheriff Mullen began his law enforcement career in 1969 when he joined the Pittsburgh Police force as a patrol officer, moving up the ranks to Deputy Chief and second in command of the Pittsburgh Police before being elected Sheriff of Allegheny County; and,
WHEREAS, since he has taken office as the Sheriff of Allegheny County, he has accomplished many projects including, but not limited to, establishing websites for Most Wanted Fugitives, Most Wanted Firearms Violations Fugitives and a site listing the County's top offenders owing child support; and,
WHEREAS, he introduced mandates preventing the Sheriff Sale of homes belonging to U.S. veterans, which prevented the sale of a veteran's home in Allegheny County; and,
WHEREAS, Sheriff Mullen strengthened the office at no expense to taxpayers in many ways, including, acquiring two explosive-detecting K-9s for use in Court facilities, and patrol rifles for all vehicles assigned to work within communities comprising the County's 13 Writ Districts, Installed laptop computers in Sheriff's vehicles to automate systems and provide the most efficient service of civil process; and,
WHEREAS, Deputies that Sheriff Mullen committed to law enforcement task forces, are credited for dismantling key gang and drug networks, including the largest street gang in Allegheny County history; and,
WHEREAS, Sheriff Mullen has been honored by several institutions outside of his own, including the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and is a member of several public safety councils and oversight boards; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sheriff William P. Mullen for his outstanding public service, professionalism and commitment to the Sheriff's Office of Allegheny County; and,
