WHEREAS the African Methodist Episcopal Church was established by Richard Allen, a member of the Free African Society and other Methodists of African descent, in order to further the cause of societal equality for people of African descent; and
WHEREAS from September 20th through September 24th of this year, the 139th Session of the Pittsburgh Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church will be held at the Radisson Hotel located in Greentree; and
WHEREAS this year's conference will be attended by 500 to 800 guests, including pastors, delegates, and members of A.M.E. churches, from both the Pittsburgh and the Allegheny-Scranton Districts of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS these districts are comprised of the 56 churches represented and their more than 8,000 parishioners; and
WHEREAS this year's conference will be convened by the Bishop of the Third Episcopal District, Right Reverend Robert V. Webster, along with Presiding Elders, Rev. Samson Cooper and Dr. Eric Brown; and
WHEREAS the Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, located at 1400 Boyle Street on Pittsburgh's Northside, will serve as the host church for the Pittsburgh Annual Conference and will hold a welcome program and reception to begin at 7 p.m. on September 20th, 2006, at the Radisson Hotel in Greentree.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby wishes to show its support for the entire Pittsburgh Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, while additionally commending this group of individuals for their dedication and service to the promotion of social justice and equity both within the City of Pittsburgh and worldwide.
