WHEREAS, Mrs. Sonia Taqi is a new resident of the City of Pittsburgh, having moved here from Pakistan with her family when her husband took a position in the city; and,
WHEREAS, after arriving in Pittsburgh Mrs. Taqi has become a great advocate for other new immigrants, assisting fellow newcomers with the many important and complex processes involved in coming to a new country; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Taqi’s service to the Pittsburgh community also includes her work as the General Secretary of the Pakistani American Association of Greater Pittsburgh, where she works tirelessly with her colleagues to promote Pakistani culture and awareness across the Pittsburgh region; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Taqi’s latest accomplishment for the Pakistani American Association is the organization of Pakistan Day, an anniversary commemoration of Pakistani independence; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Taqi and her family’s story of immigration, community, and welcoming represents so much of what has made Pittsburgh a great city throughout history and today; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and celebrate the accomplishments and community activism of Mrs. Sonia Taqi, and further joins the Pakistani American Association of Greater Pittsburgh in celebrating Pakistan Day by declaring Tuesday, May 3, 2016 to be “Sonia Taqi Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
