WHEREAS, 2007 marks the Centennial Anniversary Year of the City of Allegheny's annexation into the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, the annexation of the City of Allegheny was the result of a somewhat controversial referendum that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court; and,
WHEREAS, prior to the annexation, the City of Allegheny was a flourishing city in its own right, with great civic buildings including the first Carnegie Library and the first public park west of the Allegheny Mountains, to name but a few firsts; and,
WHEREAS, the official annexation held December 7th in the year 1907 was attended by Honorable George W. Guthrie, then Mayor of Pittsburgh, and the Honorable Charles F. Kirschler, then Mayor of the City of Allegheny; and,
WHEREAS, the 100 Year Anniversary is being planned by the Allegheny City Society, a non-profit organization that has preserved the history of the former Allegheny City; and,
WHEREAS, festivities include an Annexation Commemoration Banquet Dinner to be held December 6th at the Grand Hall at the Priory located on the North Side, featuring live entertainment and local celebrities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acknowledge the 100 Year Centennial Anniversary of the official annexation of the City of Allegheny into the City of Pittsburgh, and encourages the thousands of residents who comprise the diverse neighborhoods of North Side, and all City residents, to remember the interesting past of the North Side and take part in the scheduled events; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, December 7th to be "City of Allegheny Day" in nostalgic remembrance of the rich history of the city's North Side.
