WHEREAS, 37 years ago, an unassuming freelance writer for Sports Illustrated and other national magazines was offered a job doing commentary for WTAE radio. The sportswriter said, "Don't try to kid me. I've heard my voice on tape." But by 1970, that well respected sportswriter, who started his journalism career under his given name of Myron Kopelman, was the color analyst for Pittsburgh Steelers broadcasting team on WTAE. Thus embarking upon an incredible career that shall be forever associated with the greatest N.F.L. Franchise and Most Loyal Fans, and
WHEREAS, In December 1975, Mahrn as he is affectionately known created, The Terrible Towel, the nationally recognized symbol of what would become the phenomenon known as 'The Steeler Nation!' From its inception, to this very day many a team succumbed to the mystical powers wielded by The Terrible Towel! Be they 'Wash-dirty Skins, Cleve-Brownies or Dallas Cryboys,' they 'Cowher' in fear when confronted by a sea of black and gold Towels, frantically waved by passionate members of Steeler Nation! Forgoing personal gain, in 1996 Mahrn quietly transferred ownership of the Terrible Towel Trademarks to Allegheny Valley School, an institution for the profoundly and mentally disabled. In the ensuing years, royalties from sales have brought the school close to $1 million. To that display of generosity, all we can say is 'Mazel Tov!' and
WHEREAS, In 1983, Mahrn became the first member of broadcast media to be appointed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame to its prestigious Board of Selectors, a group of 30-plus media persons who elect NFL stars into the Hall; clearly recognizing that Mr. Cope is more than a regional voice spouting memorable catch phrases, but a well respected expert on all aspects of the game of football. Due in large part to his tireless efforts, former Steeler Lynn Swann was granted long overdue induction to the Hall of Fame in 2001; and
