Title: WHEREAS, The SOKOL Movement, founded in 1862, in Czechoslovakia by Doctor Miroslav Tyrs is dedicated to physical fitness, intellectual enlightenment and moral development; and WHEREAS, the Slovak Sokol Society in the United States was started in 1892 in Chicago Illinois, beginning over a century of tradition promoting the ideals begun 30 years earlier in Czechoslovakia; and WHEREAS, by 1905 there were 90 lodges with over 2,500 members in eight states including Pennsylvania where in Pittsburgh the Slovensky Sokol became the organization's official publication; and WHEREAS, in testament to the Sokol tradition of physical fitness, in 1942, 98% of The Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol members were found fit for military duty, compared with 70% of the general population; and WHEREAS, at the first Sokol Slet 700 gymnasts performed for 2 days, June 18th and 19th 1882, over 5,000 participated in Prague in 1994 in sports ranging from track & field to yachting to archery and in staying tr...

WHEREAS, Sokol USA is celebrating Sokol Fest in the City of Pittsburgh from June 29th to July 1st, 2007;
 
 
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Sokol USA and thank it's members for their contribution to the City of Pittsburgh.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Friday, June 29th, 2007 as "Sokol USA Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
