WHEREAS, James Louis Grzeczka, born on February 9, 1926, is a proud son of Pittsburgh's South Side Slopes, where he grew up surrounded by family, neighborhood camaraderie, and the unmistakable spirit of a community that looks out for one another; and,
WHEREAS, from an early age, James embraced the values that define Pittsburgh such as hard work, humility, resilience, and heart; and,
WHEREAS, these values that shaped him into a man admired not only for what he accomplished, but for how he treated others along the way; and,
WHEREAS, at just 17 years old, James answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. Brooklyn and traveling the world while representing his hometown and nation with courage, dedication, and honor; and,
WHEREAS, following his return home, James built a life rooted in love, labor, and laughter, working a wide range of jobs, becoming a union member and respected leader at Mine Safety Appliances, and earning a reputation as someone who could always be counted on; and,
WHEREAS, James shared an extraordinary love story with his wife, Theresa, whom he married in 1953, and together they built a family filled with joy, devotion, and tradition, raising three children, welcoming grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and modeling a partnership defined by affection, humor, and unwavering support for more than 70 years; and,
WHEREAS, known for his boundless energy and enthusiasm, James has remained active throughout his life by bowling, golfing, coaching youth sports, lifting weights, playing cards, completing crossword puzzles, cheering on Pittsburgh sports teams, and reminding everyone around him that age is simply a number; and,
WHEREAS, James continues to bring warmth and positivity to all who know him, welcoming family and friends with open arms, sharp wit, and a generous spirit that has touched generations and strengthened the fabric of his community;...
