WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition was formed in response to the media reports documenting the high mortality rate and atrocities among the refugees of Darfur, Sudan with a mission to assist in whatever efforts needed by local organizations and individuals to address this crisis; and
WHEREAS, in Darfur, Sudan, an estimated minimum of 30,000 innocent civilians have been killed, more than 200,000 people have been forced from their homes and have fled to neighboring Chad, and more than 1,200,000 people have been internally displaced; and
WHEREAS, there is an ongoing humanitarian crisis in which food and pharmaceuticals must be provided to the vast numbers of displaced individuals in the Darfur area; and
WHEREAS, on July 22, 2004 the U.S. Congress passed resolutions declaring genocide in Darfur, Sudan; and
WHEREAS, for the first time in its history, the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has declared a "genocide emergency" in the Sudan; and
WHEREAS, August 25, 2004 has been set aside as a national day of consciousness by the Save Darfur Coalition to bring attention and continued pressure to resolve this catastrophe; and

NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pittsburgh City Council joins the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition in a Day of Conscience for Darfur to raise the awareness of the humanitarian crisis and encourage all levels of government and local and national organizations to support the necessary measures needed to stop the killing, the rape, and the destruction of villages; and, to assist in the implementation of humanitarian relief for the Darfur area refugees.
