WHEREAS, with its bright orange cart and rainbow-striped umbrella, Gus and Yia-Yia's Iceball Cart is something of an unofficial landmark; and
WHEREAS, since 1934, the Kalaris family has been serving up hand-shaved, gourmet ice balls from, when Gus's dad, George, first operated the business and Gus's mom, Yia-Yia (Grandmother in Greek), was at the stand helping serve and chat with friends and customers; and
WHEREAS, during the summer months, Gus and Yia-Yia's can be found each day from about 11am to 9:30pm in its customary location along Western Avenue, next to the tennis courts in West Park on Pittsburgh's North Side, as the sign on the cart reads "Since Your Dad Was A Lad"; and
WHEREAS, the ice is hand-shaved and the syrups, from recipes perfected by George in the late 1930s, come in a colorful assortment of flavors - pineapple, cherry, lemon, lime, orange, banana, grape, blueberry, root beer and the popular Rainbow; and
WHEREAS, Stella and Gus Kalaris, born and raised on the Northside, Stella grew up in the California-Kirkbride neighborhood and Gus's home was on Sandusky Street, just above AGH, have lived in Brighton Heights for many years; and
WHEREAS, on April 25, 2012, at the Allegheny City Society Annual Meeting, held in the Magovern Conference Center at Allegheny General Hospital, Gus and Stella Kalaris are being honored for their dedicated communal efforts and as excellent examples for citizens across Pittsburgh's Northside;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate, Stella and Gus Kalaris on their award and does hereby declare April 25, 2012, to be "Gus and Yia-Yia Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
