Title: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes this outstanding young man, Benjamin S. Mericli of Troop 269 and commends him for his commitment to the betterment of his community and his great personal achievement.

WHEREAS, as a young child, Benjamin S. Mericli frequently heard his grandfather Frank Smetanka talk of his experiences as a scoutmaster and the joys of scouting; and
 
WHEREAS, Ben began his scouting career as a Tiger Cub in Pack 165 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Beechview and then followed his older brother Alex and cousin Seth Mangini into Boy Scout Troop 269 at Wallace Presbyterian Church where his uncles Jerry Hirschfeld and Keith Mangini were leaders; and  
 
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Scoutmasters William Gery and Tim McGuire Ben served in a variety of leadership positions, including scribe, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and Troop Bugler; and  
 
WHEREAS, Ben's Eagle Scout Project consisted of designing and organizing the landscaping of the grounds of St. Catherine's Church, removing old shrubbery and replacing it with a raised bed of flowers and ornamental grasses; and
 
WHEREAS, this Seton LaSalle High School Class of 2004 valedictorian and current freshman at the University of Pittsburgh has completed the requirements of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor;
