WHEREAS, on May 20, 2010, Community Human Services (CHS) will celebrate its 40th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, CHS seeks to enhance people's lives and strengthen communities by providing opportunities to develop individual potential and by delivering comprehensive services that maximize the health and well-being of those it serves in South Oakland and the greater Pittsburgh area; and
WHEREAS, CHS formed in 1970 when residents of South Oakland joined together to stabilize their community and address the changes that resulted from many homeowners selling their homes and moving out of the neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, CHS was led for its first three decades by founder and former Executive Director Phil Pappas; and
WHEREAS, CHS provides homeless assistance programs, mental health residential programs, after school and summer camp programs and hosts a Head Start program; and
WHEREAS, since 1986, CHS has operated Wood Street Commons, an affordable housing option that provides its residents with private rooms, low-cost meals, access to medical care, counseling, training and the fellowship of other residents.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the 40th anniversary of Community Human Services and commends the organization for its efforts to improve the lives of the people it serves; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares May 20, 2010, "Community Human Services Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
