Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate UCP/CLASS for raising the community's consciousness about promoting independence for people with disabilities and creating a welcoming and inclusive community; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, September 12, 2011 to be “UCP / CLASS DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, United Cerebral Palsy / Community Living and Support Services (UCP/CLASS) was founded in 1951 as a small clinic for families to support children with cerebral palsy and has grown to be a major human service provider in the region as well as a strong national advocate for disability rights; and,
 
WHEREAS, the mission of UCP/CLASS is to support people with disabilities as they explore options, participate in the community and strive toward equality and now serves more than 4,000 individuals with all types of disabilities to achieve independence and community involvement; and,    
 
WHEREAS, UCP/CLASS' three non-profit corporations, United Cerebral Palsy of Pittsburgh, Community Living and Support Services and the UCP Foundation are guided by 40 community board members, many with disabilities, who have pledged themselves to
UCP / CLASS' mission and who share their expertise with the agency; and,
 
WHEREAS, UCP/ CLASS' vision is to be the provider of choice for people with disabilities, the employer of choice for new and existing staff and the investment of choice for individual, corporate and foundation donors and to that end, UCP/CLASS has made the concepts of justice, opportunity, friendships and community a reality for persons with disabilities.
 
WHEREAS, 2011 marks the 60th Anniversary of UCP/CLASS and its successes in empowering people and creating communities and will celebrate by opening a new location in Swissvale on September 12, 2001.
