WHEREAS, BOOM Concepts, a creative hub committed to advancing black, brown, femme and queer artists, has been a vital presence in Pittsburgh since 2014. Over the past decade, BOOM Concepts has curated 50 on-site exhibitions, distributed over $250,000 in artists’ fees and organized 200+ events nationwide.

WHEREAS, BOOM Concepts has served as a space for field building, knowledge sharing, mentorship, and storytelling, BOOM Concepts challenges and uplifts the creative community, encouraging innovative strategies for entrepreneurship and artistic practice.

WHEREAS, situated at the intersection of art, culture, and history, BOOM Concepts stands as a black artist-led space, guided by the principles of agitation, innovation, and hip-hop. Their vision centers on creating spaces for black, brown, and femme individuals, fostering open and rigorous dialogue that evolves into dynamic learning exchanges across communities, laying the foundation for more just actions.

WHEREAS, in the month of March 2024 marks BOOM Concepts 10th anniversary in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood. It was established in 2014, by DS Kinsel and J Thomas Agnew, with the support of Rick Swartz of the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation and a collaboration effort with The Heinz Endowment staffers Justin Laing and Rob Stephany. Through exhibitions, temporary public art and enduring connections between artists and communities has been undeniable.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 5th, 2024, to be “BOOM Concepts Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
